A deputy shot a man who approached with a shovel in hand during an incident in Immokalee, according to a Thursday morning news release from the Collier County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies administered first aid and the man was transported to NCH Northeast where he was pronounced dead, according to the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff's office did not immediately identify the man who died.

At 1:12 a.m., Collier County deputies were called to the area of Edenfield Way in Immokalee in reference to a disturbance, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies encountered a man who was holding a shovel, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies ordered the man to the ground, and he failed to comply, according to the sheriff’s office.

The man advanced toward deputies, the sheriff's office said, and one of the deputies shot at him.

The deputy who fired his gun feared for his safety and that of the people around him, according to the sheriff's office.

The sheriff’s office is conducting a criminal investigation into the shooting, which is standard practice for the department.

An administrative investigation also is underway, per agency policy, according to the sheriff’s office.

The deputy who fired the weapon Thursday has been placed on administrative leave, according to the sheriff’s office.
