More than 200 deaths associated with COVID-19 have been reported in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties since the pandemic began, according to the latest report from the Florida Department of Health.

The department reported Friday that the virus had claimed the lives of six more people in Escambia County and one more person in Santa Rosa County.

That brings the total deaths in both counties since the start of the pandemic to 202.

Escambia County has reported a total of 157 deaths, including 147 state residents and 10 non-Florida residents. Santa Rosa County has 45 COVID-19 deaths.

Of all deaths in both counties, 88 are tied to long-term care centers, including 79 in Escambia County and nine in Santa Rosa County.

The state on Friday also confirmed another 87 new COVID-19 cases in Escambia County, growing the cumulative total to 10,122. Santa Rosa County added another 37 new COVID-19 cases to its total, which is now at 4,125.

Due to delays in reporting, figures from the state's daily report do not necessarily reflect when a person died or became infected with the virus, but rather when their case was reported by the state.

The median age of positive coronavirus cases was 39 in both Escambia and Santa Rosa counties, as of Friday.

To date, 13% of the 71,422 peopled tested in Escambia County and 14% of the 29,603 people tested in Santa Rosa County have been positive for COVID-19.

Latest hospitalizations due to COVID-19 in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties

The number of patients with COVID-19 being treated in Escambia County hospitals was 193 on Thursday. Friday's hospitalizations have yet to be released.

Over the last two weeks, hospitalizations peaked at 234 on Aug. 1 and reached a low of 187 on Sunday. Daily hospitalizations are reported from Ascension Sacred Heart, Baptist and West Florida hospitals directly to Escambia County and the city of Pensacola.

The state reported Friday that Escambia County's cumulative hospitalizations — how many COVID-19 patients have been hospitalized since the start of the pandemic — was 609, up by eight from the previous day.

The number of currently hospitalized COVID-19 patients in Santa Rosa County is not being compiled. Data from the Florida Department of Health shows that as of Thursday, a cumulative 216 people with COVID-19 have been hospitalized in Santa Rosa County since the pandemic began. That's an increase of 12 from the previous day.

Escambia County on Friday morning had 386 available hospital beds, and Santa Rosa County had 197, according to the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration.

Ten of the 147 adult ICU beds in Escambia County were available, and 10 of Santa Rosa County's 22 adult ICU beds were open.

Florida reports 228 deaths and 6,148 new COVID-19 cases Friday

The Florida Department of Health reported 228 additional COVID-19 deaths Friday as the overall toll from the novel coronavirus surpassed 9,000 statewide.

The state's cumulative deaths reached 9,141 for Florida residents Friday. Florida's seven-day rolling average for reported deaths increased slightly to 173. In the first two weeks of August, there have been 2,298 COVID-19 deaths verified for Florida residents. That's more than double the number of deaths reported for any full month other than July (3,338 deaths) since the pandemic began.

On Friday, the department reported 6,148 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the state's total to 563,285. 

Friday marked the 19th straight day the state reported fewer than 10,000 new cases. Florida's seven-day average for new cases dropped to 6,459 Friday. The state's cumulative positivity rate for overall cases increased slightly to 13.51%. 

The number of Florida residents hospitalized with COVID-19 is 33,155 since the pandemic began. The Department of Health notes the total figure is cumulative and does not reflect the number of COVID-19 patients currently in hospitals.
